LAKE CHARLES, LA, July 22 – United Way of Southwest Louisiana donates $10,000 to James Ward Elementary School in Jennings. The gift is part of the annual Writestart Program initiative that ensures teachers can ensure each student has the school supplies necessary to ensure a successful start to the year.

“Louisiana ranks 47th in the nation in Education and we know that 50% of Jefferson Davis Parish children are living in households who were struggling economically prior to the pandemic,” explains Denise Durel, president and CEO of United Way of Southwest Louisiana. “Our goal is to create a successful pathway for children from families stuck in a cycle of generational poverty. Beginning the school year with items as simple as school supplies is a stone on this path.”
