LAKE CHARLES, LA-For the 2014 tax season, United Way of Southwest Louisiana hosted 9 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program Sites (VITA). This program was implemented in Beauregard, Calcasieu and Jefferson Davis Parishes. The program was designed to provide free tax preparation services to taxpayers qualifying for Earned Income Tax Credits. The VITA program is a partnership with the Internal Revenue Service, City of Lake Charles, Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, Entergy, McNeese State University, JD Bank, Foreman Reynaud, Calcasieu Parish Public Library, Care Help, myfreetaxes.com, and BeauCare.

In Southwest Louisiana VITA volunteers prepared more than 1700 returns free of charge to qualifying individuals and had an economic impact of over 2.9 million dollars.

"United Way of Southwest Louisiana is part of a worldwide network that is working towards positive community impact. Programs like VITA help improve financial stability for hundreds of individuals and families throughout our region. It helps them take control of their futures, and in turn, reinvest back into their communities,” said Denise Durel, President and CEO of United Way of Southwest Louisiana. "We are excited to have the VITA program as a platform to serve the community at no cost to those who need it most and we are extremely proud of its overwhelming success this year.”

The program is utilized as an effort to help taxpayers recoup the estimated $15,000,000 in various Earned Income Credits which go unclaimed in Southwest Louisiana annually and uses community volunteers who are IRS Certified tax preparers. The program also allows volunteers the opportunity to gain employable experience.
