United Way of Southwest Louisiana’s Initiative Assisting Returning Individuals with Resources Necessary to Contribute in Society
LAKE CHARLES, LA, July 19 – United Way of Southwest Louisiana will return monthly coalition meetings for the Calcasieu Prisoner Reentry Initiative to face-to-face in August. Organizations providing resources or services for formerly incarcerated individuals reentering Calcasieu Parish is invited to attend the monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 from 1:30 to 3:00 pm. The meeting will be held at United Way of Southwest Louisiana, 815 Ryan Street, Lake Charles.
Returning to the community from jail, prison or juvenile detention is a complex transition for offenders, family members and their communities. United Way of Southwest Louisiana’s goal is to assist returning individuals with their transition into the community by finding human services resources organizations that can share available services or collaborate on opportunities. Examples of services would be to help with education, job skills, housing, food, counseling, substance abuse and other obstacles to success.
“Sadly, statistics show us that half of the country’s incarcerated do not have a high school degree or GED,” explains Denise Durel, President and CEO of United Way of Southwest Louisiana. “Returning to our community from prison with limited housing options and a lack of job skills almost ensures that someone will be unable to make it. We hope to create a coalition of organizations with resources that can assist these individuals when they return. This benefits our community by enhancing public safety and certainly gives them a longer, healthier life.”
Individuals needing assistance following incarceration can use United Way of Southwest Louisiana’s 211 resource line to find options. Individuals needing to earn a small number of community service hours can sign up for notification of upcoming volunteer projects at unitedwayswla.org/volunteer.
