Baton Rouge, LA- Wayne Stabiler, Jr., CEO, Disaster Resource Group, announced today the donation of nearly 20,000 meals to be prepared and donated to Lake Charles families impacted by Hurricanes Laura and Delta. The massive cooking event and family meal giveaway will be held on Saturday, December 19, at the Lake Charles Civic Center.
The holiday meals will be portioned and packed to distribute to 2,000 families via a “family meal pan” to feed eight to ten individuals. The specially catered, traditional holiday meal of rotisserie turkey and all the trimmings will be provided free via no contact, vehicle distribution at an event called “Holiday Helpings Family Meal Giveaway”. Meal distribution begins at 10 a.m. until all meals have been donated on first-come, first-served basis.
“We are deeply grateful to have provided the relief services to the hard-working power restoration teams in Lake Charles; and we know firsthand this community has endured tremendous loss. In addition, they are struggling with COVID fatigue. We want to bring some hope and happiness to this community,” Stabiler added.
Disaster Resource Group is working with the Mayor’s Office in Lake Charles and the United Way of Southwest Louisiana in managing the event as well as to encourage churches, civic organizations, non-profit organizations and the news media to distribute the information to those in the greatest need in this local community.
The Disaster Resource Group crew will arrive in Lake Charles two days before the event to begin the massive cooking preparation of the fresh meals on site, said Dondi McNulty, Corporate Chef.
“Using our industrial mobile catering kitchens and manpower, the crew will roast more than 2,000 turkeys, 5,000 pounds of sweet potatoes and 5,000 pounds of green beans, and 2,000 pecan pies,” said McNulty. “We anticipate bringing more than 50 team members to cook, wrap, assemble and distribute the family meal pans for giveaway. It will be a top-quality holiday meal ready to eat or heat.” All COVID safety measures will be in place as the meals are prepared and distributed.
Vehicles must enter the Lake Charles Civic Center, 900 N. Lakeshore Drive, via Bord Du Lac Drive on the north side of the facility, and follow the signs. For information, call United Way of Southwest Louisiana, Tami Chrisope at (337) 433-1088.
