United Way of Southwest Louisiana to Oversee Emergency Services Grants from FEMA
LAKE CHARLES, LA, May 15 – United Way of Southwest Louisiana is currently accepting grant applications from nonprofits assisting Calcasieu parish residents with food and/or shelter in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Two federal grants are available for distribution totaling $226,488 and applications must be submitted by May 22, 2020 at 4:00 p.m.
The Emergency Food & Shelter FEMA Board has allocated Phase 37 funds of $93,370 to supplement emergency food and/or shelter programs. Appropriated by Congress, these funds help meet the needs of hungry and homeless people across the country based on population, unemployment and poverty.
An additional $133,118 in CARES Act funding is also available for Calcasieu parish to combat the effects of COVID-19. These funds are part of the Coronavirus Aid package passed in March. Priority for funding in this category will be given to those agencies serving individuals directly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nonprofit organizations may apply by submitting an application to United Way of Southwest Louisiana by 4:00 pm on May 22, 2020. Organizations can apply to both categories of grants. Criteria for funding requires the organization to be nonprofit, governed by an unpaid board, have a qualified accounting system with annual audits, practice non-discrimination and demonstrate they can administer local emergency food and/or shelter programs.
