LAKE CHARLES, LA, September 4 – United Way of Southwest Louisiana kicked off its 2019 Campaign with its annual breakfast Thursday, August 29, at the Lake Charles Civic Center. Campaign season is the nonprofit’s annual fundraising drive for donations that go directly back into the needs of Southwest Louisiana.

“Every dollar donated to United Way of Southwest Louisiana by an individual supports local programs and services,” Denise Durel, president and CEO, said. “Our Corporate Cornerstone Partners cover 100 percent of the administrative costs,” she added, “making it one of the lowest overhead costs of any major nonprofit organization.”

United Way’s recent awarding of a Guide Star Gold Seal of Transparency from Charity Navigator, the nation's largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities, is proof that contributing to it is one of the safest ways to engage in local philanthropy.

United Way of Southwest Louisiana supports the work other regional nonprofits in Calcasieu, Allen, Beauregard, Jeff Davis and Cameron parish do through grants and also focuses on its own initiatives in education, economic mobility, health and basic needs. In the previous fiscal year alone, United Way made a $3.5 million community investment in Southwest Louisiana.

Alan Trantina, senior vice president and general manager of Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino, will serve as the campaign’s chair. In his address Wednesday, he commended the hard work of the nonprofit as demonstrated through its ever-increasing influence in the community including a new homeless initiative launched in partnership with the City of Lake Charles, The Path Home, and its new 833.TXT.TEEN line, a crisis support texting platform for troubled teens.

“This is a community made up of problem-solvers and gift-givers who take care of everyone in need. That’s why we’ve decided the theme of “Take Action” is perfect for our 2019 Campaign,” Trantina said. United Way of Southwest Louisiana publishes an annual themed campaign film that can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/dz4U6-ndDh0.

Durel said this year the organization plans to “take action” to address several underserved populations in Southwest Louisiana. “Our goal is to raise enough money to increase our community investment programs. There are unfulfilled needs in our community and organizations ready to fill them. We believe all of us should do our part to better the communities we live in. Our part is identifying needs!
