LAKE CHARLES, La. – United Way of Southwest Louisiana kicked off another season of campaigning at a community event on Thursday at the Lake Charles Civic Center. The superhero-themed event was a celebration of a new year of giving back to the community.
The 2013 United Way Campaign theme is "Be a United Way Superhero”, and the fundraising goal is $4 million. United Way of Southwest Louisiana helps the community by raising and distributing funds to 34 local agencies that focus on health, education, financial stability or crisis intervention. Through its agencies, United Way of Southwest Louisiana is able to help over 100,000 people in the region.
Clad in superhero themed costumes, the emcees for the event, Patricia Prebula with Axiall and Britney Glaser with KPLC, announced that United Way had already reached 16.5% of its goal thanks to its Pacesetters, companies that have completed their United Way campaigns with their employees prior to Kick-Off.
Campaign Chair Robert Gelinas with Biolab, Inc. also took the theme to heart, addressing the crowd in a cape and mask. "I am honored to serve as this year’s chair,” said Gelinas. "One of the things I most enjoy about working with United Way is that it allows everyday people like you and me to find our inner hero. By pooling our resources of time, money and heart, even the smallest donation can make great strides toward improving the health, income and education levels in our community.”
United Way of Southwest Louisiana also thanked its Corporate Cornerstones, companies who designate their corporate gifts to help underwrite the campaign, dues and administrative costs of United Way of Southwest Louisiana.
