Local non-profit capitalizing on opportunity to share its mission with the five-parish region

LAKE CHARLES, LA, December 4 – United Way of Southwest Louisiana will host an online watch party for its 2020 campaign video Friday, December 11 at 11 a.m. on Facebook page www.facebook.com/UnitedWayofSWLA. The video, which serves as a recap of the non-profit’s mission, services and initiatives, is typically previewed at the annual Campaign Kickoff Breakfast.

COVID-19 forced the non-profit to shift its breakfast to an online format and then Hurricanes Laura and Delta forced the group to cancel the celebration entirely. “Despite the cancellation, we still want the community to know that are here working and sticking to our mission,” Denise Durel, president and CEO, said.

“We have not allowed a global pandemic or even two natural disasters knock us off our goal of community improvement and we think it’s important the community understands the scope of our work over the last year especially,” she said.

United Way is inviting the public to take a behind the scenes look at their work through the virtual watch party. “There are many positive things happening right in people’s back yard that our organization is directly responsible for,” Durel said.

“Uniforms for students to return to school, cash payments to sustain families faced with layoffs and carloads of free groceries and hot meals distributed for months. Even if we can’t gather together to celebrate these accomplishments, we want people to know their donated funds are being put to good use.”

The watch party is also an opportunity for first time donors or those looking for a charitable outlet to grasp the far-reaching impact of the non-profit which serves Allen, Beauregard, Cameron, Calcasieu and Jeff Davis Parishes. “We are much more than people realize. United Way of Southwest Louisiana has a pulse on literally every community within our radius. If there’s a need in Lake Charles, we’re there. If there’s a need in Jennings, we’re there and if there’s a need in DeRidder, we are there. Wherever people are watching this video they will see their friends and neighbors being served by our caring and compassionate team.”

While there is no need to RSVP for the watch party, we would love to know you plan to join us. Please email our team at liveunited@unitedwayswla.org. Visit https://www.facebook.com/UnitedWayofSWLA and click “Get Reminder” on the pinned post.
