Mary's Story

If you are like most people, you are looking forward to enjoying a relaxed retired life some day. Imagine that day came and instead of enjoying your grandchildren you were left homeless from a hurricane, unable to help yourself.

For Mary Doucet, this became a reality.

A retiree on a fixed income, a hurricane damaged home forced Mary to move in with grown children. Despite faithfully paying homeowners insurance with no lowering of premiums, she was denied coverage because they had dropped her wind and rain portion. Mary had no choice but to continue paying the note and insurance despite the unlivable situation.

A chance meeting with United Way of Southwest Louisiana returned Mary’s freedom and independence by assisting her with a new home. The best part? She can have her family holidays again and gather everyone around her table for food and company. She feels safe and secure when she has her grandchildren for a sleepover.

“It means a lot to me… I really thank God for you coming to my rescue because I didn’t think I’d get any help. It just got to where I didn’t care anymore. They made me want to live again.”

Support from people just like you makes United Way’s work possible and now, is more important than ever with 47% of our community struggling to afford the basic necessities. Donations help us bring weekend food packs to the 1 in 4 children in Southwest Louisiana who are food insecure and depend on public school meals for their only source of food.

Join us in the important work we do in the community by making a tax-deductible gift to United Way of Southwest Louisiana.

You can be assured your gift will go directly to the heart of this community.
