As we enter another hurricane season, I reflect on the resilience and strength of our Southwest Louisiana community. The memories of Hurricanes Laura and Delta still linger, reminding us of the physical destruction and emotional challenges accompanying such life-altering events. Now more than ever, it’s crucial to address the mental health needs that arise during these turbulent times.
Anxiety and stress are common responses, not just during hurricane season but also as we recall the past impacts of these storms. Many of us carry the weight of these experiences, and it’s essential to recognize that seeking help is a sign of strength.
At United Way Southwest Louisiana, we are committed to supporting the mental health of our community, particularly during this season of uncertainty. We have launched three vital Initiative aimed at providing immediate access to mental health resources:
211: This essential resource connects individuals with a wide range of support services in our area. Whether seeking mental health support, housing assistance, or food resources, dialing 211 connects them with trained professionals who can guide them to the right services. It serves as a lifeline, especially during stressful times.
Online Crisis Chat: For those who may feel more comfortable seeking help online, our Online Crisis Chat offers a confidential and supportive space to discuss mental health concerns. This Initiative provides immediate access to trained counselors who can help individuals cope with anxiety, stress, and trauma, offering support when it’s needed most.
833.TXT.TEEN: Understanding that teens face unique challenges, especially amid crises, we have launched the 833.TXT.TEEN (833.898.8336) Initiative. This resource allows teenagers to text for help and receive support from trained crisis counselors. Ensuring our youth know they have a safe outlet for expressing their feelings and seeking assistance during difficult times is crucial.
In addition to these Initiatives, we are proud to partner with several local agencies dedicated to providing vital mental health services:
Kay Dore Counseling Agency at McNeese: This agency offers counseling services that cater to the diverse needs of our community, ensuring that individuals have access to quality mental health support.
Oasis A Safe Haven: This shelter in Calcasieu Parish is focused on providing a safe space for those affected by domestic violence and trauma; Oasis is critical in fostering healing and recovery for its clients.
Family & Youth Counseling Agency: This agency specializes in family dynamics and individual counseling and works tirelessly to support our community, especially our youth and families who need guidance and assistance.
June Jenkins Women's Shelter: This shelter in Beauregard Parish is a refuge for women and children fleeing dangerous situations. It offers safe housing and critical emotional and psychological support.
Jeff Davis CADA: This women’s shelter in Jeff Davis Parish provides a haven for women and children seeking refuge from domestic violence and trauma, offering necessary support and resources for healing.
These partner agencies embody our commitment to addressing mental health needs in our region. Through collaboration and financial support, we empower these organizations to expand their reach and improve the lives of countless individuals and families facing challenges.
We included the women’s shelters we fund in this list because we recognize that domestic abuse often escalates during times of stress and anxiety, such as hurricane season. The emotional turmoil and uncertainty can exacerbate volatile situations, making it crucial to support these vital resources. By providing safe havens and comprehensive support, these shelters play an essential role in protecting vulnerable individuals and families during challenging times, ensuring they can access the assistance they need to heal and rebuild.
As we prepare for this hurricane season, I urge each of you to prioritize your mental health and that of those around you. Remember that it’s OK not to be OK; reaching out for help is a courageous step. Please know that United Way Southwest Louisiana is here to support you through any challenges that may arise.
Together, we can build a stronger, healthier community, navigating whatever storms come our way. Let's ensure that we are informed, prepared, and supportive of one another.
With appreciation,
